Will Mobile Wallets Make EMV Upgrades Unnecessary?

NOTE: Visa and MasterCard announced on December 1, 2016, that the EMV liability shift for gas pumps would move from October 1, 2017, to October 1, 2020. 

With the usage of smart phone-enabled mobile wallet apps expanding, fuel retailers are faced with the choice of adding near field communication (NFC) technology to their pumps. This decision comes as they are implementing their gas-pump payment upgrades to accept EMV “chip-and-pin” cards. As of October 2017, fuel retailers may be liable for payment fraud unless they have upgraded their pumps hardware from magnetic-strip readers to EMV readers.
